Bookworks Encourages Customers to Shop Local Now, So You Can Shop Local Later

ALBUQUERQUE—Bookworks, the thirty-six year old independent bookstore in Albuquerque’s North Rio Grande River valley, just celebrated its anniversary in the shopping plaza it shares with six other local businesses. Its owners Danielle Foster and Wyatt Wegrzyn, who bought the store ten years ago, are cautiously optimistic as the unofficial start of holiday shopping, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, approaches.

“The weekend after Thanksgiving is the traditional launch of our big fourth quarter sales. Holiday shopping in November and December usually accounts for 40% of our revenue,” says Danielle Foster. “Our online orders are starting to ramp up, but. honestly, we’re not sure what to expect this year.”

Indeed, 2020 has perhaps brought the most unexpected surprises of the store’s thirty-six year history. A North Valley social staple, along with its neighbor, Flying Star, Bookworks hosted upwards of 400 in store events, in addition to dozens of large scale events and mobile conference sales annually. Pre-Covid. With live events put on hold and the store closed for browsing since March, the business model changed overnight.

“When the pandemic first started in March, we closed our doors to our beloved customers,” says Foster, “and while it was a hard decision to make then, we’ve been making it every month. We’ve maintained our online presence for shipping books direct to home, along with limited curbside hours throughout.”

With New Mexico’s stay at home orders back in effect, it’s pandemic-era business as usual for the store. “We are encouraging folks to shop local now, so you can shop local later. Don’t wait to buy your essential holiday gifts from your favorite businesses. We all need your business right now,” Foster says.

Offerings on the Bookworks website through month’s end include free shipping on orders of $40 or more through Small Business Saturday weekend and until the end of the month November 30, free gift wrapping, curbside service, holiday catalog and great gifts suggestions, local 2021 calendars, and a new hooded sweatshirt campaign.

Bookworks will celebrate Small Business Saturday on November 28 with three events with New Mexico authors:

1 pm: Perry Wilkes, author of the memoir, Under Torn Paper Mountains

3 pm: Deborah Madison, author of the memoir An Onion in My Pocket, in conversation with Dara Goldstein.

5 pm: Tiffany Gravelle, author of Blended Not Stirred, a book about blended families
