Pat

Pat has worked at Bookworks for 2 1/2 years, finally reaching a goal she has had for so long, to work in a bookstore that she can walk to. Her other job is being a potter and Asian brushwork painter. Her favorite author at the moment is David Benioff, although this can change from week to week as she tries to keep up with what is new. Margaret Atwood is a life-long favorite, as is Cormac McCarthy, E Annie Proulx, and a recent discovery, Haruki Murakami. Bookworks feeds her addiction for the printed word and pulls her out of the studio so she can practice her rusty social skills with people who love to read.

On the eve of the Fiesta de Santa Fe in New Mexico, people gather to watch the burning of a huge puppet called Zozobra. The 300-year-old custom represents a new beginning, as the problems of the past year vanish in the flames. This year the event becomes a crime scene when a child's skull is discovered in the ashes. Detective Sergeant Gilbert Montoya works with Lucy Newroe, a newspaper editor and volunteer EMT, to find the identity of the victim. The case takes them to every level of Santa Fe society, from gangbangers to judges, none of whom are happy when the investigators come calling, attempting to tie the skull to a cold missing-person case. Readers will enjoy the Santa Fe atmosphere and the local lore along with an intriguing plot.

This is a marvelous tribute to Jeannette Walls' unforgettable grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Written as a true-life novel, Lily was born in West Texas in 1901 and lived a tough, rough life with her own brand of grace. She didn't like nonsense, prejudice, or whining but she had a great sense of humor along with her practical, hardworking nature. This is a stunning account of the times and most especially the indomitable Lily - a woman you won't soon forget. This is a book you won't want to miss!
